This is a pretty common question among web masters. So without further ado let's begin!
A lot of site owners especially the one's who have some understanding of SEO,to them the thought of someone spamming their website with ad backlinks is quite terrifying!
This essentially falls under what is known as negative SEO.But don't worry there is still not someone who has fallen for an attack like this.
It is certainly not something that you want to be subjected to of course.
Now there are a couple of things that i will recommend that you can do to keep an eye on your link profile.
But firstly i want to say that do not ever get involved in anything that would give anyone any type of reason to want to spam your website with bad links in the first place.
OK so what can you do in terms of keeping an eye on your link profile,in an effort to try and at least be aware and prepared for anyone that might have bad intentions!
There are plenty of tools that you can use to monitor your link profile like:
Majestic SEO open site explorer and Ahrefs and there are a couple of others but these tools are the best ones!
Now within most of these tools they will show a historical timeline of link acquisition and of course link loss over a period of time.
And essentially what you will be looking for if you are concerned with getting bad links is huge or sudden spikes or bursts in inbound links.
Now trying to determine where these links are coming from, depends on which tools you are using.
It is typically not to hard you can usually export the data and sort by recent activity!
You want to take a look at the stuff that has just happened recently that is of course if your site has recently been slammed otherwise you will have to do a little more digging around.
Now once you have got this data exported you will want to sort through it as best you can and in particular look for any sort of spammy or junkie looking sites!
A couple of things that you want to probably look at are questionable domains, things like 'aasas.xyx' or something similar.
And of course look for domains and websites that have low domain authority,Sites that are rubbish or spammy will typically have very low domain authority!
If you do find sites like this within your list then it is always worthwhile taking a look at the websites themselves and you will know straight away as to whether or not they are garbage or worth keeping.
Now if you have been slammed with bad links the first piece of advice to remember is please don't panic. You may have seen a lot of people get bad backlinks and they think it's the end of the world but what's most important is that you keep your cool and you action accordingly!
Now the first thing that you should do is compile a list of all of the crappy sites that have been linked to your domain and prepare, what is know as a disavow request now of course i am not going to go into detail on how you can prepare this but essentially like i mentioned earlier
you want to get a complete listing of all the crappy sites that have been pointing at your site and push them through disavowing request!
This is a free service that Google provides and it has been set up purposely for this particular reason.
Now something else that i want to mention is that i have got to try and get rid of all these links!
So you need to be really careful where you invest your time and effort if it is just a handful of bad links then you probably don't need to take nay action at all.
If it's hundreds of links or more then certainly submit a disavow request, you don't want to be sitting for months and months trying to clean up bad links.
if you feel you can do it then feel free to do so,but please don't waste all your time on monitoring your link profile and chasing down bad links because it would not leave you with any time to do anything of purpose!
And lastly, how often should you monitor your link profile?
This is not something that you should actively do,you should take a look at your link profile once every few months 4 to 5 maybe!
People really get paranoid about spammy stuff on their site at times and they, every single day take a look at if there are any bad links that need to be taken care of.Now this is taking it to the absolute extreme, there is no need to do that!
Conclusion So please focus on the more important things of your website, like providing great content, providing a good user experience and doing all of that good stuff!
OK so that is it for this article!
